I am interested in the ways that bias and motivation can affect our reasoning and memory to influence the judgments and decisions that we make. In school, I studied how these biases apply to real-world situations, such as political conflicts, hiring decisions, technology use, and legal decision-making. I explored not only how biases affect decision-making but how to help people overcome them in order to best communicate with others that don't share their views or experiences. My dissertation focused on the problem of "fake news" on social media, exploring ways to make warning tags on headlines more effective over time.
Currently, I work as a UX researcher for the mobile game Star Trek Fleet Command. I use surveys and other research methods to uncover player sentiment, motivations, needs, and issues to help recommend solutions to the game that improve player experience and retention. I care about building positive communities and communication practices, responding effectively to disruptive behavior, and ensuring that everyone feels welcome in gaming spaces.
